China reciprocates Sabah’s kindness with medical supplies

KOTA KINABALU: At height of China’s battle against Covid-19 in February, the Sabah government had a fundraising driving to assist the country’s victims in a “small way”.

On Sunday (March 29), China’s Kota Kinabalu consul-general, Liang Caide, returned the favour on behalf of his government with thousands of boxes of face masks, protective suits, goggles, thermometers and others.

“Today is just the first batch, more will come,” Liang said after delivering the consignment flown in on a chartered Air Asia flight to terminal two of the international airport here, together with Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal.

“We remember the help extended by Sabah and the Chinese government is grateful.

“We are brothers fighting Covid-19 together. Sabah, stay strong,” Liang said during a simple handing-over ceremony on Sunday.

Liang assured that his office would work closely with the state to assist Sabah’s needs to source necessary equipment.

China has also offered a wide range of support, including sending medical expertise to Malaysia.

In thanking Liang and the Chinese government, Shafie said that Sabah was very grateful for the assistance as there was a dire need, especially from the medical fraternity.

He said that Sabah, through consultation with the state Health Department, would continue working with the consulate to obtain assistance for any equipment needed.

Shafie said that he had also spoken to Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein on the assistance being provided by China.
